Request deletion of your data
Last updated: 15 August 2026
You are in control of the data you bring to Sortd. This page explains your right to have your personal data deleted and the practical ways to exercise it.
You can remove much of your data yourself inside the app at any time, and you can also ask Sortd to delete personal data it holds about you. Below, we walk through both routes, what we can delete, and what to expect.
Your right to deletion
You can ask Sortd to delete personal data it holds about you. This is sometimes called the right to erasure or the right to be forgotten.
MENTECH, the company behind Sortd, is established in the Arab Republic of Egypt, so this right is grounded first in Egypt's Personal Data Protection Law (Law No. 151 of 2020). Because Sortd also serves the wider region, the policy is designed to align with the UAE Personal Data Protection Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021) and the Saudi Personal Data Protection Law, and it broadly follows the principles of the GDPR.
In most cases you do not need to give a reason for your request. Some limited exceptions apply, which we explain below.
Delete your data yourself in the app
The fastest way to remove most data is directly in the app, on your own, without contacting us.
Delete individual transactions
Open any transaction and delete it. Removing a transaction removes its amount, merchant name, notes, tags, and related details from your history.
Remove accounts and cards
You can delete any account or card label you added, including its last four digits and the balance derived from it.
Discard captured items in review
Bank message text, receipt photos, voice notes, and imported files wait in a review area before anything is saved. You can discard any captured item there, and it will not become a stored transaction.
Export first if you want a copy
Deletion is permanent. If you may want a copy of your information later, export it before you delete.
You can export all of your data as JSON at any time from the app. The file includes your transactions, accounts and labels, budgets, savings goals, and other records you have created.
Delete everything by deleting your account
If you want to remove everything at once, delete your Sortd account. This removes your profile and the data associated with it, subject to the exceptions described below.
Before you confirm, the app shows an in-app preview of what will be removed. For full details and steps, see the Delete your Sortd account page.
How to submit a data-deletion request
If you would rather have Sortd handle the deletion, or you want to delete specific data without deleting your whole account, you can send us a request.
- Email privacy@thesortd.com from the email address linked to your Sortd account.
- Tell us what you want deleted (for example, your whole account, or specific records such as a particular account label or a set of transactions).
- We verify your identity to make sure the request is really from you.
- We process the request and confirm to you when it is done.
What we can delete and the exceptions
We aim to delete the personal data we hold about you. In some cases, we may need to keep limited information.
Data we may need to keep
- Records we are required to retain to meet legal, tax, accounting, or regulatory obligations.
- Information we need to detect, prevent, or investigate fraud, abuse, or security incidents.
- Data we must keep to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.
Anonymized and aggregate data
We may retain data that no longer identifies you, such as anonymized or aggregate information used to understand and improve the service. Because it cannot be linked back to you, it is not treated as your personal data.
Where an exception applies, we keep only what is necessary and for only as long as needed, then delete or anonymize it.
How quickly we respond
We respond to deletion requests within a legally appropriate timeframe, typically within 30 days of verifying your identity.
If your request is complex or we receive many requests at once, we may need more time. If so, we will let you know within that period and explain the reason for the extension.
Your data and AI providers
When you used an AI feature, the relevant content (for example a bank message, receipt text, a voice transcript, or a question together with figures computed on Sortd servers) was sent to an AI provider to process and return a result.
If you used Bring Your Own Key, you connected your own provider account (such as OpenAI, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, DeepSeek, or a custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint). That provider's own terms and data practices govern any data handled under your key. To delete data held there, use your provider's controls or contact them directly.
For Sortd AI, we use third-party AI providers that we manage, and we choose providers with appropriate data protection practices. When you delete your data in Sortd, we delete it from our systems as described on this page. We cannot promise, as a fact, that a provider retains nothing, so if this matters to you, review your provider settings and consider Bring Your Own Key for more direct control.
